Hapag-Lloyd reminder to Iran customers of VGM SOLAS regulation
FOLLOWING the enforcement in July 1 of SOLAS Regulation regarding container verified gross mass (VGM), Hapag-Lloyd has sent a reminder to customers in Iran on the importance of accuracy in their VGM transmissions.
The German container shipping line urged customers to declare an accurate weight including the tare weight. "Do not estimate the VGM, instead please make use of the SOLAS method 1 (weighing) or 2 (calculation). Wrongly declared VGMs may cause lives to be at risk and unsafe transportation," reported the American Journal of Transportation.
It also called on customers to submit their VGM on time and to take into consideration the local VGM cut-off time. We recommend sending us your VGM as soon as your container is packed and sealed, the shipping line said.
The company warned that breach of the SOLAS Regulation result in penalties and fines starting from December 1, 2016.
A fee of US$50 will be imposed on each container if the VGM is submitted after VGM closing but still acceptable on a planned vessel. In the case of incorrect VGM Declaration (VWD), a fee of $200 per container will be imposed if a terminal or Hapag-Lloyd detects weight discrepancy or wrongly declared VGM during the transport.
