Miami, Brussels airports create organisation to improve pharma handling
BRUSSELS Airport (BRU) and Miami International Airport (MIA) have joined forces to establish Pharma.Aero, a new organisation focused on improving pharmaceutical handling in the global air cargo industry.
"With the vision to achieve a reliable end-to-end air transport for pharmaceutical cargo, Pharma.Aero will focus on pharmaceutical shippers who embrace the IATA CEIV [Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators]," said Pharma.Aero chairman Nathan De Valck.
"Members of the organisation will foster route certification/development of pharmaceutical trade lanes, implementation of best practices and sharing of market knowledge and expertise," he said.
So far Singapore Changi Airport, Sharjah International Airport, Brussels Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Brinks Life Sciences have joined the organisation, reported American Journal of Transportation.
Global head of Cargo, IATA, Glyn Hughes, said the Pharma.Aero collaborative initiative "enhances the air cargo industry" value proposition and adoption of global standards in transporting time and temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals."
Said Miami-Dade Aviation Department director Emilio Gonzalez: "Today marks an important day for MIA, as we shift our efforts towards collaborating with other pharma stakeholders around the world through Pharma.Aero."
He said that Pharma.Aero welcomes airport communities, airline carriers, logistics companies, and other pharmaceutical stakeholders including shippers to become members. Pharma.Aero has already received endorsement letters from several pharmaceutical shippers, including MSD, UCB and Pfizer.
