Sierre Leone terminal extension sod turning brings out head of state

SIERRE LEONE president Ernest Bai Koroma and Transport Minister Leonard Balogun Koroma were guests of honour at the commencement of construction ceremony at the Bollore container terminal expansion in Freetown.

Paris-based Bollore Ports, first operator of infrastructure in Africa and a major player in French terminal operations, endorsed the immediate start of the Freetown port expansion works to be completed September 2018.

"This is a major project for Sierra Leone. It will contribute to enhance potential of the natural bay of its capital Freetown, first port of the country," said the statement from the Paris-based company.

The construction includes the building of a quay extension of 270 metres to a depth of 13 metres, in addition to the existing 707 metres, creating a median of 3.5 hectares, and the establishment of a power plant dedicated to the terminal.

Two gantry cranes will be set up from the start to significantly improve productivity of the Port of Freetown.

The new dock will accommodate 6,000-TEU, taking the total capacity of the container terminal to 750,000 TEU against 90,000 to date.
