Court to rule on whether government alone can trigger Brexit Article 50
BRITISH judges will rule on whether the government alone can trigger Article 50 to leave the European Union without a parliamentary vote, reports the Guardian, a London newspaper.
Anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller, an investment manager is leading a legal challenge over Prime Minister Theresa May's right to trigger Article 50.
The legal dispute centres on who has authority to notify Brussels that Britain is withdrawing from the EU under Article 50.
If the judges concluded that parliament should decide, the majority of lawmakers may not favour leaving.
Attorney General Jeremy Wright said that initiating withdrawal does not change any UK laws and that the consequences will be subject to future negotiation and parliamentary scrutiny.
Claimants argue that the Brexit referendum was merely consultative and that a decision to leave has not yet been taken. Parliament alone, they argue, has the power to decide.
