Intelligent Transmission for Fast Craft

ZF recently presented a transmission from the ZF 83700 series with advanced status monitoring.

ZF recently presented a transmission from the ZF 83700 series at the SMM marine trade show in Hamburg. It is a new transmission for high speed ferries and authority vessels. The transmission''''s highlight is the advanced status monitoring, developed originally for large wind turbine gearboxes.

"Digitization and Big Data are also dominant trends in the marine industry. And this development will continue to grow in the coming years. A great challenge that we are happy to face", says André Körner, Head of the Commercial & Fast Craft Product Line in the ZF Marine Propulsion Systems Business Unit. At SMM in Hamburg, one of the most important trade shows for the maritime industry, the company demonstrated that it is also fully prepared for the future in the marine sector. At the trade show, ZF presented the new ZF 83700 transmission for the first time. This transmission was developed for fast craft such as high speed ferries and authority vessels. The new transmission expands ZF''''s portfolio. Its power range outperforms the ZF 63000, making it the biggest and most powerful fast craft transmission.

The chief attraction is hidden inside the transmission: The advanced status monitoring installed in the transmission now also records dynamic loads, vibrations in the bearings and gears and the particle and water content of the oil. These new functions were added to the standard monitoring features of parameters such as oil level, condition of the clutch or the inlet and outlet temperatures at the cooling unit.  "The status monitoring is a perfect example of technology transfer within the company", says, Head of the Marine Propulsion Systems Business Unit. Originally, it had been developed for large wind turbine gearboxes. A team of developers has now adapted the status monitoring to meet the requirements of the commercial shipping industry.

In the meantime, the developers are already working on making the transmission even more intelligent. The next stage of system monitoring will make it possible for vessel operators and maintenance coordinators to assess the condition of important ship components and to help minimize potential unplanned ship downtime. In addition, operating costs can be reduced with the help of status monitoring, because unnecessary maintenance work will no longer be required. And finally, it will be possible to better coordinate vessel maintenance and operating times.
