SGS China and CargoSmart tie up to weigh and convey VGM compliance

HONG KONG's CargoSmart, a global shipment management software solution provider, has announced that it has teamed up with SGS China to provide a way to meet new UN container weight verification rules.

The alliance allows shippers to use standard and efficient weighing procedures to collect and submit the required data to carriers in a timely manner to comply with VGM requirements.

These come with compliance requirements of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention's Verified Gross Mass (SOLAS VGM) container weight rules from the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

SGS is the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, said the release. SGS helps manufacturers establish standardised procedures and performs on-site inspections and assessments to verify the weighing process of how VGM data is generated, it said.

"The alliance allows our customers to achieve VGM compliance worldwide from cargo weighing through electronic filing," said SGS China marketing manager Aaron Wang.

After the new regulation went into effect on July 1, the industry has followed a three-month practical and pragmatic approach to enforcing the regulation.

To date, over 30,000 logistics professionals have submitted VGMs through CargoSmart to comply with the new SOLAS regulation, said the company release.

"CargoSmart's VGM solutions let shippers collect and submit VGM information to ocean carriers through online, EDI, and mobile channels. In addition, shippers can monitor the VGM submission status through online dashboards and alerts to ensure timely submission.

"We are pleased to have SGS China join our alliance network to enable shippers and weighing service providers to elevate their weighing processes with standard procedures and certified equipment to ensure VGM accuracy," said Lionel Louie, chief commercial officer of CargoSmart.
