IAG, Finnair drop DHL freighters for London-Helsinki bellyhold instead

PARTNER airlines IAG Cargo and Finnair Cargo have decided to use bellyhold space on their Airbus 350 aircraft instead of continuing to use DHL A300-600 freighters on their service between London and Helsinki, starting October 3.

Service frequencies will be raised from two to five times per week, with flights operating on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, as the A350 aircraft offers less capacity of 30 tonnes versus the A300 freighter's 42 tons, reported London's Air Cargo News.

The London-Helsinki service will also use London Heathrow rather than London Luton.

"The new arrival times into London Heathrow and Helsinki will allow better connectivity for both partners onto their respective transatlantic and Asian network," said IAG Cargo.

The two airlines commenced the Helsinki-London freighter flights in July 2015, with Finnair customers gaining greater access to North America and IAG boosting its connections with Asia.

IAG Cargo's new cargo boss Drew Crawley said earlier that the airline would continue to take space on freighters, rather than operate its own, because of the success so far of switching to an "outsourced capacity model" that involves purchasing space from freighter airlines.
