Kalmar wins order for 12 container handlers from South Carolina

THE South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has ordered 12 Kalmar empty container handlers, including five used machine trade-ins, for Charleston and Greer with delivery expected early next year.

The order includes 11 Kalmar DCF90-45E7 empty container handlers and one DCF90-45E8 empty container handler with capacities of nine tons, designed for heavy-duty strength and stability.

The equipment will join a fleet of 35 Kalmar empty and loaded container handlers already in use at SCPA facilities, a statement from the equipment manufacturer said.

"The container handlers will help meet growing volumes at our Wando and North Charleston terminals as well as the South Carolina inland port terminal in Greer," said SCPA's director of terminal operations, Stevenson Kemp.

The SCPA handled 1.9 million TEU during the 2016 financial year ending June 30, marking an increase of 1.4 per cent over the previous year. Container volumes moving inland via intermodal transport has also risen, with the Greer inland terminal recording growth of 57 per cent to 91,698 rail moves in FY2016.
