PANYNJ and US Army Corps complete New York Harbour dredging

PANYNJ and the corps sought to deepen the Ambrose Channel, Anchorage Channel, Port Jersey Channel, Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill and Newark Bay.
Dredging ensures ships of 48-foot drafts can navigate safely, the port authority said in a press release.
PANYNJ said it is also advancing a the Navigational Clearance Programme, that is increasing the air draft of the Bayonne Bridge that spans the Kill Van Kull and connects Staten Island, New York, with Bayonne, New Jersey.
Its original air draft of 151 feet is being raised to 215 feet to accommodate the much larger neopanamax vessels.
To be completed by the end of next year, the PANYNJ statement said: "The deepening project, coupled with the raising of the Bayonne Bridge, will usher the port into a new era of international commerce and will maintain our position as one of the world's premier shipping destinations".
