National Airlines seeks US safety exemption to fly more outsize cargo
NATIONAL Airlines, a US cargo carrier, has petitioned the US Department of Transport for an exemption from safety rules for Boeing 747 freighters with the intention of boosting its business in the outsize cargo sector.
Claiming that a rule relating to the tie-down of tall, rigid cargo has cost it millions of dollars in lost business, the airline has sought permission to transport the cargo without the "G" requirement, reported London's Loadstar.
National Airlines - along with rivals Atlas Air and Kalitta - has an exemption already, but it only applies to flights to and from Afghanistan for the Department of Defence. It wants to operate with the exemption anywhere in the world.
National claims the regulation has "caused major economic impacts" and that an exemption would have no adverse impact on safety.
