Night gates now permanent feature at Port of Oakland's largest box terminal

THE Port of Oakland's International Container Terminal will make evening operations permanent, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

Night gates were intended to take pressure off busier daytime operations, but were then found useful enough to gain permanent status.

The decision comes at the end of a successful three-month trial. Oakland is one of the few US ports that stay open late for container pick-up or delivery.

"This is an important step," said maritime director John Driscoll. "We're making it easier for customers to do business with us by saving time and improving efficiency."

The terminal's night gates are open from Monday to Thursday, 6pm to 3am, for truck drivers to haul cargo. As a result of the night gates, 1,300 container transactions nightly have migrated from day to evening, according to data compiled by the terminal and the port.

The average transaction time for truck drivers fell from 96 minutes in August to 79 minutes last week. Thirty per cent of trucking companies at the port have lowered congestion surcharges assessed to customers for picking containers.

"The system is working and customers are paying less," said CEO Scott Taylor of GSC Logistics, one of the largest trucking companies at the port. "Things are better and we're saving time."
