DHL Express opens US$10 million HK package processing warehouse
GERMANY's DHL Express, the world's leading express delivery company, has officially opened its new highly automated warehouse at Goodman Interlink in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong.
The new facility complements the company's existing service centres in Cheung Sha Wan and Tsuen Wan and bolsters package handling capacity of the company, to meet the steady growth in of this segment of the market.
The new Tsing Yi service centre represents a total investment of HK$78 million (US$10 million) and covers 13,000 square metres, double the size of the previous warehouse located at the same building.
The warehouse boasts the strongest handling capacity among all DHL service centres worldwide and is able to handle up to 380 tons of shipments per day.
It also has state-of-the-art a high-speed reweigh and re-measure machine, itself a HK$1 million investment, that doubles throughput to 2,200 packages an hour.
To further enhance shipment security, the facility is equipped with 122 closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras which provide 24-hour monitoring services.
"The opening of the Tsing Yi Service Centre follows double-digit growth in our international shipments over the past year," said DHL Hong Kong and Macau chief Herbert Vongpusanachai.
"With a steady growth in our Hong Kong business contributed by the strong e-commerce sector, this facility is set to cement our market leadership with its enhanced handling capacity," said Mr Vongpusanachai, a senior DHL vice president.
The opening supports future volume growth, underpinned by the construction of a third airport runway and expected to further boost the air cargo output of Hong Kong.
DHL also saw a strong growth in time-definite international (TDI) shipments over the past year and is confident that demand for TDI express services will continue to grow with the rise of e-commerce.
Located in Tsing Yi, it offers access to Hong Kong's transport network, being within direct highway reach of the airport and the city's central business district, container terminals and mainland China.
