Tel Aviv-Haifa coastal trains shut down over Sabbath repair work row

A ROW between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Transport Minister Israel Katz shut down the 100-kilometre coastal rail line from Tel Aviv to the northern city of Haifa.

The daylong shutdown responded to religious party concerns that repair work was being done on the Saturday Sabbath, Bloomberg reported.

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Tel Aviv and Haifa when it was announced that train service would be suspended.

The crisis was brought on by the transport minister wanting to foment trouble for his rival the prime minister, by triggering a coalition crisis within the ruling Lukid-led government, according to Netanyahu's office.

The crisis rekindles tensions between the country's religious parties and the secular majority, many of whom wish to lessen rabbinical influence in politics.
