Four Korean lines form Mini Alliance to fill in for bankrupt Hanjin
A KOREAN consortium, calling itself the Mini Alliance, and made up of four companies has formed to fill the gap left by bankrupt Hanjin Shipping, reports Singapore's Splash 24/7.
Composed of Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), Korea Marine Transport, Sinokor Merchant Marine and Heung-A Shipping, the Mini Alliance, will deploy 15 vessels on four routes from South Korean ports to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand from the end of September.
"The decision was made in order to minimise losses of the shippers on the southeast Asian route due to Hanjin Shipping fallout and to compete with global shipping lines," said an HMM official.
HMM will deploy one 5,000-TEUer, one of 2,800 TEU, one of 2,200 TEU and another of 1,700 TEU on the southeast Asian routes later this month.
HMM said it has been in talks about joining the 2M container shipping alliance with Maersk Line and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and hopes to sign a final contract in November.
