ABX Air to launch daily air freight service from Chicago for secret customer

ABX AIR is to start operating a daily air freight service using Boeing 767 freighters from Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) on September 8. However, the airline remains tight lipped over whose cargo it will be carrying.

The new service is raising eyebrows after parent company ATSG, based in Ohio, won a contract earlier this year to provide online retailer Amazon with an air cargo network operated by 20 B767 freighters.

ABX Air plans to raise the flight frequency to five times per day by year-end. As part of the deal, the airline will rent from RFD space in a 72,000 square feet ramp-side warehouse. Pinnacle Logistics will provide ground handling services, reported London's Air Cargo News.

RFD's executive director, Mike Dunn, was quoted as saying: "We believe that our location, the availability of a warehouse and a ramp as well as the 200,000 square foot MRO facility which will be operated by AAR created a winning combination for this deal."
