Oz forwarders' dilemma: Do they or don't they invest in x-ray gear?
THE Freight & Trade Alliance in Australia questions whether cargo terminal operators (CTOs) can physically examine 100 per cent of US-bound air cargo on passenger flights - not to mention freighter flights mandated by Australian law - when new American rules take effect on July 1, 2017.
"Airlines may put this onus on the CTO if they need to do this to retain or attract new freight forwarder business," said FTA director Paul Zalai.
"So with time ticking away, where does this leave Australian forwarders? Do they invest in x-ray or keep their fingers crossed that the CTO will offer this service?
"Similarly, we have also heard rumours that third parties are contemplating setting up commercial x-ray services.
"The Australian Federation of International Forwarders (AFIF) has initiated a member survey to try an answer to this 'chicken or the egg' dilemma. Hopefully the responses will start to give some clarity to the situation," said Mr Zalai.
