Belize favours full Taiwan's membership in UN's aviation agency
THE official newspaper of the ruling party of Belize, a small Central American country (pop 368,310) on the Caribbean, expressed support for Taiwan's bid for membership in the UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) next month.
"As a close partner of Belize, Taiwan deserves the strong support of Belize in its campaign for participation in the upcoming 39th ICAO Assembly to be held in Montreal from September 27 to October 7," said the unsigned editorial in the weekly Belize Guardian, the official organ of the ruling centre-right United Democratic Party.
"Although occupying a critical geographical location and handles large cargo and passenger volumes, the Republic of China (Taiwan) has not been a formal member of the ICAO yet.
"It has been seeking to take a part in ICAO over the years to promote aviation safety and facilitate better global air travel and economic development. With the assistance extended by international partners, including Belize, the campaign has gained significant momentum," said the editorial.
Like Taiwan, whose de facto independence is disputed by China, which views it as part of China under Beijing's control, Belize, formerly British Honduras is claimed by Guatemala. It is a matter yet to be resolved by international arbitration.
