New logistics facility for DHL Express to be developed at Budapest Airport

A BIG warehouse and office complex for DHL Express is to be built at Budapest Airport near Terminal 1 on a site measuring 13,000 square metres. The new facility is expected to open in July 2017 and accommodate 300 employees.

This is the second large-scale investment by Budapest Airport and Deutsche Post DHL, after the latter's freight forwarding business units moved into a new facility at the Airport Business Park in 2013, reported Mumbai's STAT Trade Times.

Air cargo volume through Budapest Airport has increased 11.3 per cent since the beginning of the year with most being freighter-borne though posting more bellyhold cargo too.

Budapest has handled 6,770 tonnes of air cargo every month so far in 2016 while revenue increased to an extent not seen throughout Europe, said an airport press release.

On-site preparation works for the new facility have already commenced and will be handed over to Hungarian construction company Market Epito Zrt in September.

Said Budapest Airport CEO Jost Lammers: "The construction of the new DHL Express facility is an integral part of our BUD 2020 development programme, which earmarks HUF50 billion (US$182.48 million) for airport development over the next five years."

Said DHL country manager Zoltan Bandli: "The move of DHL Express' operations to Budapest Airport is a large-scale project. The value of the greenfield investment will reach EUR25 million (US$28.23 million), the largest in the CEE region.

"The fully automated new sorting system and enhanced shipment processing capabilities will allow us to implement an even earlier courier departure and later courier arrival. Based on the wider service window, we will examine the range and the coverage of our premium services," Mr Bandli.
