SATS wins concession to handle cargo at Dammam airport, Saudi Arabia
THE Saudi subsidiary of Singapore-based airport ground handler SATS has won the tender for the cargo handling licence to operate at King Fahd International Airport (KFIA) in Dammam.
The concession with KFIA and the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia (GACA) is valid for 22.5 years, reported London's Air Cargo News.
SATS said in a statement that the concession "marks the first step taken by GACA to introduce a second player into the cargo handling market at KFIA and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia".
SATS added: "GACA, KFIA and SATS have formed a strategic tripartite partnership with the aim of elevating service standards and introducing new service offerings at Dammam to position KFIA as a key air cargo hub in the eastern province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
SATS will build a new cargo terminal near KFIA to handle up to 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually. It will include a dedicated cold chain facility to meet the growing needs of the pharmaceutical and food industries to ship high value, temperature-sensitive goods.
The construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2019.
