Japan gives nod to Iberia on Europe-Japan flights in one world alliance

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has granted an extension of the anti-trust immunity to include Iberia in the joint business between Japan Airlines, British Airways and Finnair, which allows the airlines to cooperate on flights between Europe and Japan.

Under the arrangement Iberia will start thrice weekly flights between Madrid and Tokyo on October 18. Said Iberia CEO Luis Gallegos: "We are very happy to launch our non-stop flights to Japan as part of this joint business."

The revenue-sharing agreement will strengthen the one world alliance and enable it to compete more effectively around the world with other global alliances, a joint statement from the carriers said.

Said Finnair CEO Pokka Virago: "The addition of Iberia to our existing joint business between Europe and Japan is a great asset and we look forward to working closely with all our partners in this alliance."

Finnair currently flies from Helsinki to Tokyo Narita, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka; British Airways operates a double daily service from London Heathrow to Narita and Haneda airports; and Japan Airlines operates daily services from Narita and Haneda to Paris, from Handed to London, and from Narita to Frankfurt and Helsinki.
