India's Odisha state to upgrade airport to export more seafood
INDIA'S north eastern coastal state of Odisha plans to upgrade the state capital Bhubaneshwar's Biju Patnaik International Airport to handle chilled and live seafood exports, reports the Times of India.State Fisheries Development Secretary Bishnupada Sethi recently met with the federal Fisheries Secretary to forward the project, said the Delhi newspaper.
"Air cargo facilities will give a boost to these high value commodities of Chilika and other places. We can send live fish, crab, shrimp or other seafood to other countries every day or week," Mr Sethi said.
The state, which exports 52,100 tons of seafood annually plans to hold talks with Paradip port for more reefer boxes. Most Odisha's producers ship export through Visakhapatnam and Kolkata.
These plans are in line with the government's announcement that it has set a target to generate revenue of INR30 billion (US$4.48 million) during this financial year from seafood exports to international markets.
The volume of the state's seafood exports rose from 14,161 tonnes in 2007-08 to 35,630 tonnes in 2015-16.
Major markets for Odisha's seafood include South East Asia (39 per cent), followed by the US (28 per cent), European Union (11 per cent) and Japan (nine per cent). Official sources said frozen shrimps account for 97.79 per cent of the total value of exports.
