Mumbai's JNPT massive dredging gets underway with Tata contract
INDIA's busiest container gateway Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Mumbai has launched phase two of a INR20.2 billion (US$310 million) dredging project by awarding a contract to domestic consulting firm Tata Consultancy. Engineering.
The project calls for deepening JNPT's 21-mile fairway to 15 metres, allowing to accept ships of more than 12,500 TEU.
The work should be complete within two years of selecting a contractor through a competitive bidding process, reports IHS Media.
Benefits include an ability to handle bigger ships, increasing container traffic, reducing costs, providing faster turnarounds and making optimum use of capacity, said a JNPT trade advisory.
