Zhuhai's AVIC plant launches China's biggest ever float plane

CHINA has produced a new amphibious aircraft from the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) production line in Zhuhai opposite Macau, state media announced.

With a wing span of 38.8 metres and a length of 37 metres, the four-engine turboprop AG600 is the largest ever float plane built in China, reports IHS Janes 360.

Xinhua said AVIC revealed the aircraft has a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 53.5 tonnes; a maximum cruising speed of 500 kilometres per hour, a maximum flight range of 4,500 kilometres, and a maximum endurance of 12 hours.

It requires a stretch of water that is at least 1,500 metres long, 200 metres wide, and 2.5 metres deep from which to operate.

According to Xinhua, the AG600 will be used for fire-fighting and maritime rescue duties.
