Japanese Airlines Cargo quarterly revenue falls 32.6pc as transpac sags
JAPANESE Airlines' (JAL) international cargo revenues plunged 32.6 per cent in the first quarter of its financial year to JPY900 million (US$8.8 million) in the three months ending June.
The Japanese flag-carrier blamed the revenue drop on the decline in demand on transpacific routes, a 4.1 per cent year-on-year decrease in cargo volumes, measured in revenue cargo ton kilometres (RCTK).
JAL blamed the international cargo revenue collapse on "various factors, which included a decline in fuel surcharge revenues caused by lower fuel prices.
Also dragging was also the effect of the strong yen on foreign currency denominated cargo revenue, reported London's Air Cargo News.
Although domestic demand for parcel shipments was "strong", the carrier said that RCTK cargo volume decreased 3.8 per cent year on year, and revenues stood at JPY400 million, down 4.7 per cent because of "intensifying competition".
