Eco lobby BAN seeks exec order from Obama to ban e-waste exports
GREEN lobby Basel Action Network (BAN) is petitioning President Barack Obama to sign an executive order to stop the export of the federal government's electronic waste to developing countries.
Much of the exported material from the US Government is sent to Hong Kong for recycling, said the BAN statement.
"Such a prohibition would not only protect the environment and human health, but would also provide thousands of green recycling jobs in the United States and provide government digital inclusion programmes with a source of refurbishable computing equipment," said the press release.
In May of this year, BAN released the results of a two-year study presented by PBS Newshour that utilised geo-locating tracking devices implanted in e-waste.
This showed that almost 40 per cent of devices delivered to electronics recyclers - many of which are Certified and thus preferentially used by US Government agencies - were exported to operations in Hong Kong and other locations in Asia.
