UK makes London airport decision, but it's not Gatwick or Heathrow

THE British government has answered the outcry for a decision to expand a London airport, but instead of deciding on Gatwick or Heathrow for a major upgrade, it opted to make a minor one at London City Airport, near the fancy office towers at Canary Wharf.

Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate said the decision would not solve the airport capacity shortage ."But today's quick decision demonstrates what can be done when an expansion scheme that is deliverable is chosen," he said.

The east London airport caters for shorthaul passenger flights, but also handles cargo, reported London's Air Cargo News. Last year, it handled 1,462 tonnes according to Montreal's Airports Council International.

Meanwhile, the battle between Gatwick and Heathrow continues, in which a new set of politican masters have taken over since the recent Brexit referendum to leave the European Union effected a change of government.

While the London City Airport expansion will enable it to accommodate larger aircraft, and increase its overall capacity, it is a far cry from what an expansion at either Gatwick or Heathrow would bring about.

The British Aviation Group (BAG) urged the government to finally make a decision on whether to allow expansion at Heathrow or Gatwick following the appointment of Theresa May as the country's new prime minister.

Said BAG chairman Chris Chalk: "We look forward to the new administration making clear that Britain is open for business by pressing ahead with airport expansion without further delay.
