Halifax Q2 boxes up 12.5pc to 120,000 TEU, rising 19.6pc in H1

THE Halifax Port Authority's second quarter container throughput was up 12.5 per cent year on year to 121,000 TEU, reported the Halifax Chronicle Herald.

The port handled 235,000 TEU in the first six months, up 19.6 per cent over the first half of 2015.

"There are several factors contributing to the positive trend we are seeing in containerised cargo throughput," said Halifax Port Authority spokesman Lane Farguson.

"New services and expanded services in August of last year along with the arrival of 8,000 plus TEU vessels, favourable currency exchange rates and support services like enhanced container tracking which was launched earlier this year, are some of the big examples," he said.

Non-container tonnage was up 29.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2016 with 161,859 tonnes compared to the second quarter of 2015 and up 35.2 per cent year-to-date with 226,896 tonnes.

Total cargo tonnage through the port was up 20.3 per cent in the second quarter with 1.2 million tonnes and up 24.4 per cent with 2.2 million tonnes over the first half of 2015.
