DHL contract pilots picket labour talks in Fort Lauderdale to threaten strike
DHL PILOTS, working for contractor Kalitta Air, were to protest in Fort Lauderdale this week to tell employers and DHL they are ready to carry out their threatened strike, reports the Aviation Tribune, of Benalmadena Malaga, Spain, 100 kilometres east of Gibraltar.
It is expected they will be joined by pilots from other DHL contractors, said the clearly partisan Aviation Tribune report.
Pickets will be outside the location of a Kalitta bargaining meeting, a short distance from the headquarters of DHL's US operation ?DHL Express ?in Plantation, Florida.
Recently, pilots from five American DHL contractors voted with 99 per cent support to strike should it be necessary.
A cargo pilot strike would cripple DHL's global operation as the five picketing carriers account for 70 per cent of DHL's total global flying, said the report.
"The management of one of these carriers, Kalitta Air, has refused for more than five years to negotiate fairly with its pilots," said the report.
"As a result, Kalitta pilots have been working under a substandard, outdated contract that became amendable for renegotiation more than five years ago," said the Aviation Tribune.
