DHL signs deal to supply heavy equipment to Ambatovy mines in Madagascar
GERMANY's DHL Global Forwarding has entered a three-year deal with Madagascar mining concern Ambatovy, a joint venture between Sherritt International Corporation, Sumitomo Corporation and Korea Resources Corporation.
The deal involves DHL, particularly the Deutsche Post division's industrial projects team, to handle large break-bulk and complex project logistics the mine needs handled.
This agreement encompasses two contracts where DHL will provide onshore and off-shore services. On-shore, DHL is responsible for customs clearance for air freight of mining spare parts into Madagascar.
This involves delivery to the Ambatovy mine site from Antananarivo to Moramanga and to the plant at Toamasina through a daily shuttle.
Off-shore, DHL will provide transport for the importation of nickel, cobalt and ammonium sulphate mining gear from the US, Europe and China.
Said Ambatovy supply chain chief Steven Cox: "It is critical we have direct access to our global suppliers to keep operations running. We are convinced DHL will drive improvements in our supply chain."
Ambatovy is a large-tonnage, long-life nickel and cobalt mining enterprise, which at full capacity will produce 60,000 tonnes of refined nickel, 5,600 tonnes of refined cobalt and 210,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate fertiliser annually.
Said DHL industrial projects chief Nikola Hagleitner: "Our partnership will enable Ambatovy to tap into our global expertise in project forwarding, an extensive network spanning 220 countries and territories."
