Charleston's container volumes rise 1.4pc to 1.9 million TEU in FY2016

TERMINALS governed by the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA), principally Charleston, saw container volumes rise by 1.4 per cent to 1.9 million TEU during its fiscal year ending June 30, against the same period a year earlier.

In spite of growth in container volumes being quite moderate, SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome expects container volumes to increase in future as a result of the upsizing of ships with the Panama Canal expansion.

During the reporting period, Charleston's breakbulk tonnage rose 33 per cent year on year to 901,974 pier tons. The number of vehicles that moved across SCPA docks rose by eight per cent to 274,426, reported American Shipper.

The Greer Inland Port handled a record 91,698 rail moves during FY2016. The facility's customer base continues to grow, with 57 per cent higher volume compared to the previous fiscal year.

The SCPA's board has authorised a US$23.6 million purchase for two new ship-to-shore cranes for the Wando Terminal in order to serve the growing size of vessels calling Charleston. The cranes are due to start operating at the end of next year in time for the completion of the Wando wharf strengthening project.

In August, the terminal will receive the first delivery of larger cranes to be put to use this Autumn.

The board also approved the purchase of 12 rubber tyre gantry cranes for the Wando Terminal and 12 empty container handlers for Wando, North Charleston terminal and inland port Greer.
