Thai ports aim to dredge to 18 metres and develop rail freight hub
THAI ports aim to develop a one-stop service centre in Bangkok with a container freight station and a single rail transfer operation in Laem Chabang, reports Port Strategy, of Fareham, Hampshire, England.
"But our policy is not just building infrastructure but working with ASEAN [Association of South East Asian Nations] countries," said Thai Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisath.
"We have to work together," he told the 14th ASEAN Ports and Shipping Conference in Bangkok, as he spoke of linking up with Da Nang, Yangon and the yet-to-be-built Dawei, as well as Busan in Korea.
Mr Termpittayapaisath made much of developing a single rail transfer operation. Although no time line was given, this programme is expected to increase the proportion of transport by rail from seven to 19 per cent.
"We will increase our capacity from 400,000 TEU this year to two million next year," said Port Authority of Thailand director general Sutthinan Hatthawong.
Coastal terminal development is expected to improve barge connections for inland waterways and in the case of Laem Chabang from other coastal ports.
Phase Three development will see Laem Chabang's draft increase to 18.5 metres and its capacity to increase to 20 million TEU, Mr Hatthawong said.
