Barcelona first half volume up 13pc to top 1 million containers
BARCELONA's port registered its best figure ever over a six-month period, after it handled one million containers during the first half of the year. This represents year on year growth of 13 per cent.
The port handled 264,624 TEU, up 11 per cent compared to the first half of 2015. Freight traffic rose by four per cent year on year to 24.2 million tonnes.
In the first half containers destined for export rose by four per cent to 323,580 units, reported Catalan News Agency.
The port's strong performance was attributed to the automotive industry, which transported a record half a million vehicles through June. Adding import and export, 477,202 vehicles were moved to facilities in this period.
According to the port of Barcelona's president, Sixte Cambra, these figures "consolidate the recovery of freight traffic and accelerate the figures of Barcelona's port activity".
