Two pilots arrested on suspicion of being drunk before takeoff in Glasgow

TWO Air Transat pilots have appeared in court charged with threatening or abusive behaviour and performing an aviation function over the prescribed alcohol limit just prior to takeoff on a trans-Atlantic flight from Glasgow to Toronto.

"We will await the results of the investigation and judicial proceedings before making any further comments,?said spokesman Pierre Tessier in a statement from the Montreal-based airline.

The pilots Jean-Francois Perreault, 39, and Imran Zafar Syed, 37, appeared in court on Tuesday, one day after they were arrested. The pair have been remanded in custody pending a subsequent court appearance within eight days. Court records list Mr Perreault's residence only as Ontario, while Mr Syed lives in Toronto, reported Global News.

According to media reports, Air Transat Flight 725 was carrying 345 passengers along with nine crew members. The airline said passengers were put up in hotels and given compensation. The flight landed in Toronto the following day.

It is believed the cabin crew raised concerns over the pilots' behaviour before the plane's scheduled takeoff.
