Canada Customs seize 20 kilos of coke in hot peppers at Toronto airport

THE Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized nearly 20 kilogrammes of cocaine hidden under a layer of hot peppers on a flight from Trinidad at the Toronto Pearson International Airport (TPIA).

Customs officers identified two suspicious boxes as the cargo was being unloaded from a carrier from Port of Spain. They opened the boxes and found "an abundance of hot peppers" on top, with 17 bricks of cocaine weighing 19.34 kilogrammes underneath, according to a CBSA statement.

All cargo on the flight was transferred to CBSA facilities for X-ray examination while officers carried out a search of the entire aircraft. A sample of the identified packages was cut open and tested positive as cocaine.

So far this year, customs officers in the Greater Toronto Area have seized over 678 kilogrammes of cocaine.

Goran Vragovic, CBSA regional director general, Greater Toronto Area Region said: "The continued vigilance of our officers enables us to successfully intercept the illegal importation of narcotics, fulfilling our commitment to protect the safety of Canadians and our communities."
