18,270-TEU Matz Maersk makes first Triple E call at Malta Freeport
MALTA's Freeport Terminal has welcomed the maiden port call of the Dutch-flagged 18,270-TEU Matz Maersk, one of the Triple E series built in 2014.
The average vessel capacity handled at Malta Freeport Terminal is 15,000 TEU. Though, with the delivery of new cranes in late 2015, the terminal has been able to effectively handle 18,000 TEUers.
With these cranes Malta is the only hub in the Mediterranean capable of handling 18,000 TEU vessels and larger, reported The Malta Independent.
The Matz Maersk arrives from the Far East via the Suez Canal before going on to cross the Atlantic. After reaching the Port of Marsaxlokk it shall continue its journey to Felixstowe.
