Australia approves Queensland cargo hub to export farm produce

THE Australian government has approved the performance of unrestricted cargo services at the new privately held Wellcamp Airport in South West Queensland, reports New York's Air Cargo World.

Airport's owner Wagner Group, a construction materials and mining company, said it seeks to build a major air freight hub for exports to Southeast Asia.

Some 150 kilometres from Brisbane, the airport was built in 2014 with private funds and plans to exploit Queensland's annual US$500 million perishables output.

"Maximising export opportunities for the industry is critical to future growth," said Australian Transport Minister Darren Chester.

Last November, Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific tested demand for regular services with a 747-8 freighter.

Exports included two helicopters to Miami and 50 tonnes of produce, including chilled beef to Hong Kong, frozen beef to Shanghai, and lettuce, pecans and mangoes from Queensland.

Said Wagner Group chairman John Wagner: "They want fresh produce from this region. It's not unrealistic to think that within 12 months we could have a freighter a day running out of Wellcamp."
