Adani meets Tamil Nadu premier on expanding Kattupalli near to Chennai

INDIAN port developer Adani group chairman Gautam Adani has met Tamil Nadu chief minister Jaya Jayalalithaa to discuss upgrading Kattdupalli port in north Chennai on a par with Krishnapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh.

Accompanied by his son and group's managing director Rajesh Adani, Goutam Adani held discussion with Ms Jayalalithaa at the secretariat for about 20 minutes, reported the Times of India.

State power and excise minister P Thangamani and senior state government officials were present at the meeting.

Adani group acquired Kattupalli port near Ennore in April this year from L&T, the original promoter of the port. Most companies based out of Sri City near Tada have been using Krishnapatnam port despite being located close to Chennai.

By improving facilities at Kattupalli, it would be able to get a significant share of that business, Mr Adani told the meeting.

"Kattupalli port has a container terminal with a capacity to load 1.2 million TEU a year," said an official.

At present, Krishnapatnam, developed by a private company CVR, has the same capacity of 1.2 million TEU, but the port's second phase expansion has been undertaken to increase the capacity to 4.8 million TEU at an investment of INR40 billion (US$595.3 million).

Located 35 kilometres from Chennai, Kattupalli started commercial operations in January 2013 with two berths with a total length of 710 metres.

The berths are designed to handle container, dry bulk and break-bulk cargo. There is environmental approval for further expansion of the port too.

The port also has permission from the environment ministry to handle cargo such as automobiles (cars, earth movers, trucks and buses), liquid non-hazardous cargo (edible oil, lubrication oil, etc) and break bulk cargo (granite, gypsum, limestone, steel and timber logs).
