New assignments for 13,000-TEU vessels as US demand slumps
POOR US demand is forcing many carriers to search for new work for their 13,000-TEU vessels, according to Mfame.guru Viswa Labs of Houston.
Taken over by much larger tonnage on their current services, most of the ships of this type were originally earmarked for re-deployment to transpacific Asia - US routes.
But most of the carriers have called for downsizing their transpacific capacity. Earlier in May, the French shipping carrier CMA CGM had abandoned plans to deploy 17,800-TEU ships on the Asia-USWC route.
A fair number of 13,000-TEU ships are being phased out of the Far East-Europe trade in a gradual manner and are being displaced by 19,000-TEU newbuildings.
Some of the ships have since joined the transpacific trade, while others are successively re-assigned to the North-South trades, as carriers begin to explore alternative employment options for such tonnage.
MSC this month has assigned two 12,552-TEU vessels to its standalone Asia South Africa - West Africa 'Africa Express" service and the carrier intends to move several 13,000-TEU ships to both this 'Africa Express" and to the Far East - WCSA 'Andes Express".
