Istanbul airport bounces back, cargo flow little affected by terror attack
ISTANBUL's Ataturk Airport is again functioning after the Islamic terror attack, resulting in 41 people dead and 239 injured, and thought to be a response to the Turkish-Israeli peace deal announced the day before.
Cargo flights have resumed at Istanbul's main airport. While the attack at Brussels Airport closed portions of that air hub for most of the month of May, Istanbul re-opened service the following day.
This is largely due to the more recent attack failing to cause extensive damage to security infrastructure, said London's Air Cargo News.
Freight sources at Istanbul Ataturk International Airport have told Lloyd's Loading List that cargo operations are not expected to experience major delays, with freighter flights continuing to operate.
Turkish Airlines confirmed that its flight operations have restarted with cargo flights operating to a relatively normal schedules.
Lufthansa Cargo said a freighter flight had been re-routed but operations are now back up and running. Lufthansa plans to operate all scheduled flights between Frankfurt and Istanbul.
The three attackers reportedly arrived in a taxi and began firing at the terminal entrance. They blew themselves up after police fired back.
