UPS to build bigger US$100 million DC 30 kilometres south of Paris
EXPRESS delivery giant United Parcel Service (UPS) is to build a new US$100 million package sorting and delivery 30 kilometres south of Paris, replacing two smaller warehouses and create 100 new jobs
The facility in Corbeil-Essonnes/Evry will open in the first quarter of 2018, the new facility will replace two smaller facilities and is expected to create 100 new UPS jobs.
The site will be a showcase for UPS's automated package sorting technology which minimises time in transit to final delivery, a company statement said.
To announce the plans, the company held a cornerstone laying ceremony that was attended by French Prime Minister, the mayors of Corbeil-Essonnes and Evry, and other dignitaries.
"The enhancement in France and the rest of Europe complements our 'best-in-class' service which provides one-day time-definite express delivery service to major European cities," said UPS Hong Kong and Macau chief Steven Wong.
"By enhancing UPS's network in Europe, we can further help Hong Kong businesses enter the markets more efficiently and enable them to harness greater growth opportunities."
The new south Paris sorting and delivery facility will replace smaller buildings in Chilly-Mazarin and Savigny for small packages and larger freight shipments. It will have an operating area of 320,000 square feet and 950 employees.
Advanced technology will make it possible to sort up to 37,000 packages per hour, using 124 loading and unloading bays, with 125 parking positions for UPS delivery trucks.
"We are bullish on Europe's growth potential and this investment in France UPS' largest for the country - is part of our $2 billion investment programme currently underway in Europe,' said UPS European chief Nando Cesarone.
In February, UPS opened a $28 million centre in Lyon-Jonage. UPS is also upgrading its network across Europe to offer 24 to 48-hour faster day-definite shipping with UPS Standard, to ship cross-border items.
