Work starts on new US$7.9 million distribution facility at Edmonton Airport

CONSTRUCTION has started on a new distribution warehouse at Edmonton International Airport that marks the latest step in the area's growth as a regional economic powerhouse, reports the Edmonton Journal.

The C$10 million (US$7.9 million) multi-use facility is being erected south of the airport terminal by Annapolis, and will house such firms as flight caterer Gate Gourmet and air cargo support companies Airport Terminal Services and Swissport Canada.

The 4,700-square metre Aeroterm building, set to be finished early next year, is the most recent in about C$500 million worth of private investment that has happened as the airport continues expanding as a business hub, said the airport's vice-president of commercial development Myron Keehn.

The money has gone toward cargo, aviation servicing, flight support, a 100-store outlet mall opening in fall 2017, and other projects, Mr Keehn said.

Last September, Air China Cargo began scheduled operation to the airport, boosting the region's gross domestic product by an estimated C$31 million annually.

There's also expansion of trucking links with Rosenau Transport's nearly completed 20,000-square metre distribution centre.

The airport's cargo volume grew 5.2 per cent in 2015, to 44,857 tonnes.
