Maersk man says 2M plans to shift service from Suez to Panama route
MAERSK's network chief Anders Boenaes says the 2M Alliance partners Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co plan to shift one of their Asia-US east coast services from the Suez to the Panama route, reports IHS Media.
"We anticipate that one of the services that go through the Suez today will be changed to go through Panama in the future, at least in one direction,?said Mr Boenaes, without saying when the shift would occur.
The carriers' Suez services to the east coast are the Maersk TP-11/MSC America, to New York-New Jersey and US South Atlantic ports, and the Maersk TP-12/MSC Empire, which calls on US North Atlantic ports.
Doubt about the Panama route's reliability remain despite the canal authority recently restoring drafts at its existing locks to their maximum 39.5 feet after fresh rains.
Future droughts and resulting restrictions could reduce capacity 20 per cent for 8,500-TEUers, placing the reliable export of heavier scrap metal and agricultural produce in doubt.
