Hong Kong Shippers' Council protests forwarders' box weigh-in fees
THE Hong Kong Shippers' Council are protesting container weigh-in charges imposed by forwarders to obtain Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of laden containers required by new rules that come into force July 1.
The VGM rules require cargo owners and shippers to submit verified container weights and convey them to the carrier before loading.
The council is aware that additional weighing fee is imposed on exporters and shippers in freight forwarding market.
It believes that such fee is unreasonable and asks exporters/shippers to reject the extra cost.
The box fee that forwarders impose on less than container loads (LCL) goods must have already included weighing service since the freight forwarders' calculation is based on weight or volume of goods which is converted to weight units (1,000 cubic metres a metric ton) - larger number is used to calculate. Therefore there is absolutely no reason for charging of new "weighing fee" or weight verification fees.
