Air France pilots end strike threat after carrier offers new deal

AIR FRANCE-KLM pilots have cancelled their strike scheduled for Friday after chief executive officer-designate, Jean-Marc Janaillac, offered them a deal, Bloomberg reports.

The agreement will keep pilots on the job while suspending implementation of compensation changes, the unions said.

The French magazine Marianne reported earlier that pilots at Air France had been asked to rule out striking before November in return for a new "social contract" with the airline.

"The leadership accepts this outstretched hand, confirming its will to see a new era in the history of the company," the SNPL, SPAF and Alter unions said in a statement.

Their demands remain intact and the strikes could resume if agreed conditions aren't met, the unions said in the statement.

Pilots oppose productivity measures requiring them to work longer hours for the same pay. They also want the airline to orders more planes. A four-day strike that ended June 14 forced Air France to cancel 20 per cent of its flights, costing it EUR40 million (US$45 million), based on a preliminary estimate and potentially harming bookings.
