Panama Canal conducts trial transits through new locks on Pacific-side
THE Panama Canal has successfully conducted another trial transit of the expanded canal just days before the third set of locks are officially inaugurated on Sunday, June 26, with the transit of the Cosco Shipping Panama.
The transiting vessel, a US-built crane ship named the Oceanus, was manoeuvred through the Pacific-facing Cocoli Locks by two Panama Canal pilots.
A statement from the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said the expanded canal will provide greater economies of scale to global commerce as neopanamax ships will be able to transit.
