New air cargo terminal inaugurated at central India's Raipur airport

THE aviation sector of central India's Raipur got a major boost with inauguration of common user domestic cargo terminal (CUDCT) at old terminal building, Swami Vivekananda airport, reports the Times of India.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) regional executive director Sanjay Jain has taken an initiative to bring all airlines under a common user cargo terminal at various airports in view of enhanced efficiency of cargo handling and better security compliance.

As a part of this programme, CUDCT at airports such as Visakhapatanam, Mangalore, Madurai, Indore, Ahmedabad, Port Blair and Bagdogra have started operations.

CUDCTs are also planned at Bhubaneswar and Ranchi. Raipur is the first airport in the eastern region to be maintained and run by GSEC Limited.

"Space for common user cargo terminal for domestic cargo has been given by AAI and the operator GSEC Limited was awarded after open competitive bidding," said airport director Santosh Dhoke.

Trials for domestic cargo have begun and two airlines- Indigo and Jet airways have began using the facility during the trial runs and Air India is likely to join soon.

"State government is working hard to ensure adequate infrastructure to support the growth anticipated in the region," said state secretary Subodh Kumar Singh.

"Chhattisgarh is on threshold of a massive growth and we shall ensure that there are no infrastructure related bottlenecks," he said.

GSEC Limited is the custodian of cargo at Ahmedabad and Indore airports for international cargo. It also operates international cargo at Visakhapatanam. It has recently started common user domestic cargo terminal at Indore.
