NYK takes part in study to develop LNG bunkering hub in Yokohama

JAPANESE shipping giant NYK is participating in a study launched by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) and Tourism (MLIT) to explore the feasibility of developing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering hub in Yokohama.

The study will examine requirements for such a hub. MLIT, the coast guard, Yokohama port, NYK, Tokyo Gas Co, Yokohama City and Natural Resources ministry form a steering committee.

In accordance with the NYK Group's medium-term management plan, "More Than Shipping 2018", the shipping line has started the process of using LNG to fuel some ships.

Last August, NYK took delivery of Japan's first LNG-fuelled tug, and had already begun construction of the world's first LNG-fuelled car carrier and LNG bunkering vessel.

The company also teamed up with ENGIE and the Mitsubishi Corporation to develop the LNG bunkering business.

"NYK looks forward to applying the company's knowledge and know-how to this study for the development of LNG fuel for ships," a company release said.

The operation of LNG-fuelled vessels can result in a reduction of nearly all SOx and PM emissions compared to emissions by vessels powered with conventional heavy fuel oil.

Use of LNG can also reduce CO2 emissions by 30 per cent and can reduce NOx emissions by up to 80 per cent.
