Iran near to multi-plane deal with Boeing, says ministry website

IRAN is preparing to unveil an order from Boeing aircraft "within the coming days," said a government website, reports Bloomberg.

The transaction would be the first struck by the US plane maker since sanctions lifted in January and would require US Government approval.

A US$27 billion order announced by Airbus Group SE amid thawing trade relations with Iran also needs a licence from an office of the US Treasury Department.

In an address to Iran's Parliament, Roads Minister Abbas Akhoundi said Iran needs a US$50 billion spent on 400 mid- and long-range jetliners and 100 short-distance planes.

Boeing has held discussions with Iranian airlines "about potential purchases of Boeing commercial passenger airplanes and services," said Boeing.

"We do not discuss details of ongoing conversations we are having with customers, and our standard practice is to let customers announce any agreements that are reached," said a spokesman.

"Any agreements reached will be contingent on US government approval," he said.
