Direct-Avia waits for nod to launch cargo services from Vnukovo Airport
RUSSIA's newest cargo airline, Direct-Avia, is set to launch based out of Vnukovo Airport with two Tupolev Tu-204-100S freighters to carry both export and import shipments, once it receives approval from Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency.
CEO Sergey Kukarev said the new airline will work with freight and mail centre, Vnukovo Cargo, and plans to fly both domestic and international routes, mostly to China.
The new airline was founded in late 2014, under the auspices of logistics and transport company Aircargo+. Russian carrier Transaero, which filed for bankruptcy last year, reported Global Trade magazine, Newport, California, previously operated its two 2009-built freighters.
According to Mr Kukarev, the carrier is going ahead with acceptance procedures for the two Tu-204-100S's at Domodedovo Airport in the interim.
Kukarev said that he is confident that the company will be able to expand by growing its fleet of Russian-made aircraft. "The Tu-204 freighters are fairly competitive," he said. "They have a niche of their own, one that has been virtually unoccupied since Transaero folded."
