Oakland May boxed exports up 5.1pc, biggest total since October 2014

A CONTAINERISED export rally is underway in Oakland, with the port reporting volume increases of 5.1 per cent year on year in May.

Oakland usually has more exports than imports. Exports accounted for 52 per cent of Oakland's laden boxes in 2016 through May, the port reported.

Year-to-date, Oakland export volume has increased 13.6 per cent over 2015. Import volume was up, too, increasing 12.3 per cent. May imports increased three per cent from May 2015 totals.

Oakland's total container volume is up 8.4 per cent so far this year. Total volume includes loaded import and export containers as well as empty containers.

It was the fifth-straight month of export gains in Oakland and the highest volume in 17 months, reported the American Journal of Transportation of Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The port said that it shipped the equivalent of 83,969 laden TEU in exports last month. That was the most since October 2014 when it shipped 86,065 TEU.

The port said that a weaker dollar had contributed to the export rally. As the dollar declines, the more affordable American good become for overseas buyers.

"Export cargo is critical to our success," said Maritime Director John Driscoll. "So naturally we're encouraged by what we've seen so far in 2016."
